Experts tell why Malaysia needs health reform act : by Jason Thomas FMT – May 9, 2020 9:00 AM

Healthcare Change

Co-Vid 19 has brought a lot of changes to our personal lives and also to many systems in the world and mainly healthcare. We suddenly have realised how important health care resources are. The capability and the number of live saving facilities like Intensive Care units and the need of professionals like doctors and nurses is now deemed a valuable asset.

It’s time we look at reforms in our healthcare system. We need to gauge our citizen’s healthcare needs more pragmatically.

Pre Co-Vid 19 Issues

There was a cry that doctors could not get jobs before Co-Vid 19. There were issues raised that private health care is too expensive.  Attempts to streamline dispensing was aggressively planned. But no one thought in detail about a pandemic that wiped every other issue out of its importance. Today we speak about the basic fundamental issue: to save the world from this pandemic.

FMT had opened this topic of health care reform. We hope it finds a good landing soon.

Buying of Services from Private healthcare

Public-Private partnership in terms of buying services from private should be the first step. We must have a win-win deal for both parties. The overall demand of healthcare delivery to the patient must be met.

The public sector should be able to afford to buy private services as in the long term there will be economical benefits. Cost of healthcare in public sector maybe more expensive if the entire service cost is calculated. In depth studies maybe required to move forward.

My view from the article:

Dr Kuljit Singh, president of the Malaysian Association of Private Hospitals, said a health reform act should seek a pooling of resources.

He said excess facilities and infrastructure in the private healthcare sector could be shared or bought by the government.

“It will be good to have reforms that allow the public sector to buy services from the private sector on an agreed price so that both sectors can be sustainable,” he said.
